The Dark Side of Reviews: Clients Exploiting Google Reviews to Extort Discounts from Suppliers

In today’s digital landscape, online reviews hold significant sway, influencing consumer choices and shaping the reputations of businesses. While they can serve as a valuable tool for transparency and accountability, there exists a darker side to this phenomenon.

Increasingly, unscrupulous clients are resorting to false Google, Facebook and Yelp reviews as a means to extract discounts from suppliers (I call Revtortion = Reviews Extortation) . This deceitful tactic not only erodes the trustworthiness of online feedback systems but also poses a grave threat to the livelihoods of honest businesses.

Recently, at D&V Mobile Detailing, we encountered such a distressing situation.

A client had engaged our services for a comprehensive package including Full Interior Detailing, Headlight Restoration, and Engine Shampoo for their 2004 Volvo CX90 – 7 Seat SUV, all to be conducted at their Vancouver location, with a quoted price of $350.

Upon completing the service, our technicians were informed by the client that payment would be made via e-transfer at their earliest convenience. However, shortly after our team departed, we received a text message from the client expressing dissatisfaction, accompanied by “before” pictures purportedly showing that the headlights were not restored and the engine remained dirty.

Subsequently, the client reached out to our management, accusing our technicians of dishonesty and alleging that the work was incomplete.

We addressed the situation promptly, acknowledging any potential communication lapses, but found the client’s characterization of our team as “dishonest” to be extreme and unwarranted.

In an effort to amicably resolve the issue, we offered a partial refund of $50. However, to our dismay, the client responded by attempting to leverage a negative review on platforms like Google and Yelp as a bargaining chip, suggesting that a further deduction of $100 might dissuade them from posting such a review.

We firmly conveyed to the client that while genuine feedback is always welcome, we refuse to entertain or acquiesce to extortionate tactics. Our commitment to integrity and professionalism cannot be compromised.

In the aftermath, the client proceeded to post a negative review accompanied by photos purportedly illustrating the alleged deficiencies in our service.

At D&V Mobile Detailing, we take immense pride in our craftsmanship and unwavering dedication to customer satisfaction. While encounters like these may test our resolve, they only reinforce our steadfast commitment to upholding the highest standards of service excellence and ethical conduct.

We invite you to view both the client’s images and those captured by our team to assess the quality of our work and draw your own conclusions.
